Young Musicians Competition Rules

Preliminary Competition:
  
Saturday, April 26, 2008, 9 am to 5 pm (Closed to the public)
   Sunday, April 27, 2008, 1 to 5 pm (Closed to the public)

   Sunday, May 4 , 2008 -2 pm (Open to the public - Adults $5, Youth 17 and under free)

Process:

Preliminary auditions include all participants. Judges select finalists to perform at a concert open to the public. Winners receive prizes awarded by Music in the Mountains which are funded by community business and individual contributions.

A Certificate of Participation will be awarded to each applicant who enters the Young Musicians Competition.

In divisions with only one entrant, participants may be honored by adjudication instead of prizes.

Application:

    Complete an application for each entry. Submit a $15 fee to Music in the Mountains for each division application. (Ensembles pay one $30 fee for the group.)

Rules for Contestants:

1.  Contestants must live in Nevada County or study with a Nevada County music teacher or attend  Nevada County schools.   The contestant's application must be signed by the teacher.

2.  Finalists will be chosen at the preliminary audition in each grade Division to compete for cash prizes. Final adjudication on May 3 will not be open to the public. A Showcase Concert of all finalists on Sunday, May 4, at 2:00p.m., Peace Lutheran Church is open to the public. Winners will be announced and awards presented at the Showcase Concert.

3.  Prizes will be awarded by judges only in those divisions where contestants display artistic excellence.

4.  Judges will be appointed by the Young Musicians’ Competition Committee. Their decisions are final. Times and locations set by the Committee shall be considered final.

5.  Solo contestants' literature must be memorized.  Ensemble contestants may use scores.

6.  Appropriate performance attire is required. 

NOTE: A separate application is required for each sole contestant or ensemble!

Applications must be postmarked no later than Wednesday, March 26, 2008!

Literature Requirements:

Division One - ( Grades 2 - 4 )
Winner - $150; Runners-up - $100 each
(Keyboard & orchestral instruments only.) 
One classical selection, approximately two to four minutes in total, from the standard solo literature of keyboard or orchestral instrument category.

Division Two - ( Grades 5 & 6 )
Winner - $175; Runners-up - $100 each
(Keyboard and orchestral instruments only.)
One classical selection, approximately two to four minutes in total from the standard solo literature of the keyboard or orchestral instrument category.

Division Three - ( Grades 7 & 8 )
Winner - $225; Runners-up - $125 each
(Keyboard and orchestral instruments only.)
One or two classical selections, approximately four
minutes total from the standard solo literature of the keyboard or orchestral instrument category.

Division Four - ( Grades 9 - 10 )
Winner - $275; Runners-up - $125 each
(Keyboard and orchestral instruments only) 
One or two classical selections, approximately seven minutes total from the standard solo literature of keyboard or orchestral instrument category.  Selection (s) may include a movement from a sonata, suite or solo piece.

Division Five - ( Grades 11 & 12 )
Winner - $325; Runners-up - $150 each
(Keyboard and orchestral instruments only.) 
Two classical selections, approximately ten minutes total, from the standard solo literature of keyboard or orchestral instrument category.  Selections may include a movement from a sonata, suite, solo piece or concerto.

Division Six Ensemble - ( Grades 2 - 5 )
Winner - $425; Runner-up - $225 (one only)

Division Seven Ensemble -
( Grades 6 - 8 )
Winner - $525; Runner-up - $275 (one only)

Division Eight Ensemble - ( Grades 9 - 12 )
Winner - $575; Runner-up - $325 (one only)

A. Trio - Instrumental ensembles including keyboard.
B. Quartet or larger - Instrumental ensembles with or without keyboard
 

Two classical selections, approximately eight minutes total from the standard ensemble literature. (Contrasting styles are recommended.)

Jean Brook Dunning Award - $550 awarded at the discretion of the judges to the soloist or ensemble who is determined to be the outstanding performance of the competition.

Applications must be postmarked no later than Wednesday, March 26, 2008!
